So where did Insul-ate start off and how did it begin? The origin story comes from an inter-form engineering competition in April 2016 in which the winner would represent Grosvenor Grammar School at Lagan College Belfast in a Big Bang Near Me event. The workshop was to last six weeks in which we were tasked to design a product related to helping the developing world. In the beginning, Insul-ate started with just the compactor and an action plan to deal with existing waste before the main development, the LifeBlock, was added prior to the Big Bang Near Me event at Lagan College. Following success at Lagan, we continued the development of the product and entered into the Big Bang Fair Northern Ireland at Ulster University Jordanstown in which we enjoyed further success. The event was a big step up from Lagan with hundreds more innovative products also on display. In total, on the day we received three awards: FM Environmental Award; Northern Ireland Young Engineers Award to attend Big Bank UK Finals and Runners up in Northern Ireland Young Engineers of the Year in our category (11-14 yrs).
